Peterhead to Ellon water main upgrade
Project Overview
We are investing £40million to upgrade almost 23km of trunk main between Peterhead and Ellon to ensure customers continue to enjoy fresh, clear drinking water for years to come, and reduce the chances of pipes bursting.
We are working with Caledonia Water Alliance to deliver this major investment to improve resilience in the North East. The work will be carried out by our sub-contractors, AG Wilson.
When are we doing this?
Phase two, from Auchiries to Ellon, has recently started (August 2024) and is expected to take approximately 24 months.

Road Closures - Updated October 2024
There are some road crossing works in the A975 that are planned for the upcoming October School holidays. Each of these will involve the closure of sections of the A975. Our team has successfully completed two planned closures at Kiplaw in just one weekend, which means we no longer require the road closure initially scheduled for the weekend of 18th to 21st October. The final closure will take place as follows:
Closure 3 (A975 – Slains School) – Road Closed from 25th October to 27th October (inclusive)
Advance signage will be in place ahead of each closure and diversions will be in place during each road closure. Please follow all signs.
Bus Information
We have been liaising with the bus company and can confirm that some bus services will be rerouted as below during the A975 closures:
Service X63 (Aberdeen – Peterhead via Newburgh): This service will operate as normal from Aberdeen to Newburgh (Main Street), then re-route via School Road, B9000 and A90 to Bridgend Junction, then via unclassified road to Cruden Bay (Golf Road) and A975, then as per normal route to Peterhead and vice versa.
Bus stops located on the A975 from Newburgh (Main Street, north of School Road/B9000) to South of Cruden Bay will not be served during the closure. Please note bus services may operate late during the closure.
