Nature Based Solutions at Douglas Community Park
Project Overview
Scottish Water, in collaboration with Dundee City Council, is seeking to create nature based solutions and improve placemaking in the streets and spaces around Douglas Community Park that aligns with the sustainable drainage strategy for the area.
The project will address existing conditions such as flooding, accessibility, and the quality of streets and public spaces.

Nature-based solutions
The Douglas Connections project aims to address flooding and accessibility issues, while improving the quality of public spaces.
What we are doing
Douglas Community Park, which is supported by the Douglas Community Spaces group, was improved in 2022 to become a diverse green space for the community of Douglas - where people of all ages can grow, play and enjoy in an attractive park that also works for the local community.
In the future, the park will help to drain excessive rainfall from the surrounding roofs and roads into the park, and away from the nearby Dighty Burn, preventing flooding by retrofitting sustainable drainage into an existing landscape.
The Douglas Connections Project is exploring opportunities for improving the Douglas neighbourhood. We have started identifying locations that have the potential for improvement, but we are looking for further ideas and feedback from the local community.
Some of the proposals for managing rainwater include:
- Collecting rainwater from the roofs and steering it into the park via rain gardens or swales
- Creating a large greenspace that captures rainwater from the nearby buildings and helps steer it to the Dighty Burn
- Find out more and leave your feedback about proposals
Why we are doing it
The project aims to create imaginative multifunctional nature-based solutions which will provide improvements not only for drainage, but also for recreation, biodiversity, nature, active travel, community identity and health and wellbeing. It will help create a resilient urban environment that can withstand the impacts of climate change.
