Domestic Smart Monitoring
Getting to Know Your Water Flow
Water is Scotland’s most precious resource – so only using what we need benefits everyone – you, your community, and the environment you live in.But how much water do we really use in our homes every day? Few people realise just how much they consume. And in Scotland, we use more than our English, Welsh and European neighbours.
Nearly half of Scots believe they use less than 100 litres per day, while a quarter admits they can't even hazard a guess!
It may come as a shock, but the average person in Scotland uses nearly 180 litres of water daily.
That's more than 700 litres a day for an average household family of four!
With rising demand and more areas at risk of water shortages, Scottish Water is exploring new ways to protect Scotland's water system.
Water is essential to life. So how do we future-proof our water resources for future generations against such challenges?
We value every drop.
Domestic Smart Monitoring leads to Smart Decisions
At Scottish Water, we're trying a new approach, by introducing Domestic Smart Monitors to find out how much water everyone needs.
The monitors can provide daily insights into water use, giving customers the tools to make smarter, more informed choices. By understanding how much water we use, we can all take steps to reduce waste and ensure our most vital resource is protected for generations to come.
The information provided can:
- Save Water: help protect Scotland's water for future generations
- Spot issues early: identify leaks and blocks
- Be part of something bigger: working together to protect Scotland's water environment
The Project
Dundee was chosen for the trial as it represents a diverse cross-section of Scottish housing, making it an ideal testing ground for innovative solutions. The city’s active leadership in net zero and sustainability projects further reinforces its role as a hub for environmental progress.
The research project - the first of its kind in Scotland - will see smart monitors installed in a carefully selected representative sample of customers' homes across the city.
Daily insights will empower customers to reduce waste, adopt sustainable habits, and enhance their customer service experience.
These households will get to know their water flow, learn top tips to help stop water being wasted, and help protect a precious resource.
This powerful information will help Scottish Water better understand how the nation is using water and help you make small changes to save a lot of water over time.
You all own Scotland's water and we look after it on your behalf. Together with Scottish Water, everyone can play an owner's part, and help build a water-efficient future for Scotland.
